Photo suppliers have ferricyanide for developing b/w film.

Hi,
xilo, i hope you know what you are doing, since HCN isnt a nice substance to deal with.
You realy should do this reaktion OUTSIDE with maximum protection (gloves etc.)
You also should lead the HCN stream directly into a solution of NaOH or KOH to form NaCN or KCN.

HCN builds explosive mixtures with with air in the limits of 4-40%, so if your distillation device explodes while you are distilling and kills you and everyone in your neighborhood! I won't be surprised!

Another thing is the salts can hydrolyse in aqueous solution, any weak acid such as carbonic acid (suffiecintly present in very small amounts in air from CO2 and H2O) to give free HCN (deadly poison!) and carbonate or formate, so if you try to evaporatre you will have little or no cyanide. My assumption is that you have not the least bit of an idea of what you are doing and how deadly of a substance HCN is!

To answer your question:
It's used to make potassium cyanide in the home book remedies techniques.

It' used to case harden steel. I recall in my first chemistry set that they gave instructions on how to heat a nail red hot and dip it in the little bottle of powdered potassium ferri (or ferro) cyanide to get a coating of melted powder on it and then keep heating it in the torch flame for a couple minutes, and quench it in water. It made a hard cased nail that would penetrate stuff a regular nail would not, without bending.

In the chemistry set its other uses were making iron based colors, and some other experiments. Get a kids chemistry set at a flea market, its usually got that chemical rather unused.

I don't want you to be poisoned either, that is why i throw in information so you will have more knowledge of some of the hazards, and hopefully be more cautious with what you do!!
