any type of weapon is not allowed as a carry on. to take a gun, (it is not all that hard) you just have to fill out some papers with the airline and they do the rest. you have to have a hard case for it if i am not mistaken. (locking it is a must) it really isn't as hard as you all might think. it is just not allowed as a carry on (dun) i think law enforcement officials can carry there side arm on though

I saw in a newspaper a few days ago that the FAA has changed the rules for police to carry weapons on to planes. They'll have to have verification information (phone numbers) that the airline can call to make sure that they're on the job and need a gun.

If they're not transporting a prisoner, they can't carry a gun onto the plane.

As for a civilian, it has to be unloaded and in a locked hard case thats checked in and loaded in the luggage compartment.
