That previous "recipie" is very dangerous and unstable. The flash I use for the 4th of July is made with 5 parts (by weight) Pottasium Perchlorate, 3 parts dark pyro aluminium powder, and 1 part sulfer. ------------------ |

Minus the sulfur, on that last composition and you make it even little safer. ex, 2 parts potassium perchlorate (KClO4) with 1 part aluminum dust, when mixing it is critical to avoid friction, impact, grinding, and electric discharge. No flash formula is actually 'safe', but the aluminum/perchlorate flash is the only acceptable formula i can think of that actually finds use in pyrotechnics and commercial fireworks, most other formulations should only be done in very small amounts for experimental purposes, small amounts is always good, even with this composition, especially if you have never experimented or are unexperienced with such dangerous formulas. Also avoid moisture, moisture is usually never has a positive effect on the composition, even in explosives. And about the other combination (with the NaClO3 and magnesium), this mixture can be used to make small firecrackers, But, it is alot more dangerous and sensitive than the perchlorate/aluminum combination -which itself is considered one of the most dangerous of pyrotechnic compositions, so the chlorate/magnesium is even more hazardous. Metal oxidizer explosives (MOX); contain Aluminium, Graphite and Perchlorate (ex, KClO4), Nitrate (ex, KNO3), Magnesium and Calcium stearate. They are fairly brisant explosives. In this composition the calcium stearate i would assume, acts as a phlegmatizer, mildens the sensitvity of the mixture, in this composition graphite and magnesium are the fuels, graphite increases sensitivity towards electrostactic discharge (electric discharge). |

is age a problem for buying chemicals? |

I used 2 parts sodium chlorate, 1 washed sulfur, and 1 part aluminium powder with a pinch of baking soda thrown in. All parts by weight. And age isn't a problem using mail order or hardware stores. But if you're a kid, forget going in person to a chem supplier. ------------------ |
