I found this at slashdot.org (its like the forum)

from the things-that-go-boom dept.
Lockle writes "A new super explosive has been invented at the University of Chicago. It's based on an existing explosive molecule called "Cubane" but it has oxygen and nitrogen bonded to it for a bigger boom. It's called Octanitrocubane. The news release can be found at Angewandte Chemie International Edition which is a German chemistry magazine (page is in English). More detailed info about Cubane, Octanitrocubane's predecessor, can be found at a site devoted to it."

heres some links to some info on the subject.

Angewandte Chemie International Edition http://www.wiley-vch.de/vch/journals/2002/press/200002press.html

ok this is the link that the post says is a
"site devoted to it" it does not work for me, but it could just be a problem with my ISP?? who knows! So someone please try it.

interesting. both sites worked for me... the second one you couldn't get to work has some great information with molecular structure pics etc. interesting stuff...

There were some posts on alt.engr.... about this new Cubane explosive, should check them out too.

Explosive power in order, OCN strongest.
TNT->RDX->HMX->octanitrocubane

ONC(oink?) is 20~30% more powerful than HMX,
cool. Its power is said come from its density, cubane is the most dense hydrocarbon
in the world.

ONC is C8(NO2)8, decompose into 8CO2 + 4N2
all gas and oxygen balanced already.

Actually, they say it's power comes from the cubane molecules structure. Those atoms are ready to spring apart.

yeah they have some energy stored within the molecule, cuz the angle between atoms are 90 degrees instead of regular 103 or so degree.

But too bad the nitration process isn't simple, take several stages and use additional chemicals besides H2SO4 and HNO3.
