I made an amazing discovery. A 20 gauge shot gun shell fits a paint ball barrel(.68 inches) PERFECTLY. The plastic part of the shell fits in snugly, and the brass on the end is a little tight, but if you bang it on a hard surface it will go in. It seems almost as if it was made for it. The paint ball barrel I have has a 'chamber' area, where the metal is much thicker(2x) on the breech end. Expect, it has these two notches right in the middle of the 'chamber' area, which would make it weak, these notches are positioned about mid-shell.
I am not sure if a paintball barrel can handle the pressure from a 20 gauge, but it is worth a try. Anyone can buy a paint ball barrel, no age limit and I got mine for $30 (US) from wal-mart. Also this barrel has holes following the rifling on the muzzle end, this will kill the pressure, which sucks. If it did work, it defently won't be as powerful as a normal shot gun. Becasue the barrel is only 10 inches long, and the holes make it even shorter. So the shot is only under pressure for like 5 inches. But I think if it worked, It would be pretty cool. Tomorrow I will shoot a shell from my paintball barrel and report if it explodes or not.

I just did some reseach on the web about pressures of shot gun shells. It seems that shells creating pressures as high as 50,000 PSI is a myth. All gauges of shells make about the same amount of pressure. The range of pressures is 7,000 - 12,000 PSI while the mean(average) is 10,000 PSI. Paintball c02 tanks are made to hold around 5,000 PSI I belive. So it is possible that one could fire a shot shell, if the barrel could withstand 10,000 PSI. 3/4" steel pipe can hold 7,500 PSI which is similar in size. So I am not 100% sure if it will work or burst.
I found out my information from:

NBK2000, In your post about your pipe shot gun I said shot shells created 50,000 PSI, I was wrong. Sorry.

When you test it, test it just like nbk2000 did, first try primer only, then half a load with no shot then full load with no shot, then half load with shot, then full load with shot. This way you can get more useful information from your 30$ barrel.

Good idea. It's hard to report results of an exploded barrel if you have no hands. Banging on the shell to force it in doesn't sound like a good idea. You can buy a tool that has 3 spring loaded grinding stones at some hardware stores. Lubricate with oil and use a drill to grind out a little extra space in the barrel for an easy fit.

I did the tests. First I tested it with only the primer, then the primer plus the wadding. I got all the way up to 1/2 powder with the wadding, then I ran out of time. But it did not show any signs of damage. And while shooting I felt no recoil what so ever.
I did notice that the primer was very much bouldging outwards, is this normal for shot guns?

youll need to tell us how you are actually firing this device before we can tell if the bulged primers are a problem, as , no they shouldnt bulge but will if there is not a solid plate flush against the rear of the shell.

There isn't a solid bolt face right up agaist the shell, there is a gap of about 1/16 of an inch. Today I shot it with 1/2 powder and 1/2 lead shot, and the barrel held up fine with still no felt recoil. It is a pain to test shells in my gun becasue when I made this gun I designed it for .22's, so the breech opening isn't large enough for a shell. So to shoot a shell I have to remove the barrel, and then bolt it back down in place, making sure it is perfectly lined up every time. The gun I am using is the one on my website.
