Has anyone here experimented with this method of making smoke bombs? I am wanting to know what ratio of kno3 to sugar is best for maximizing the smoke output. And please don't quote some book or something unless you have actually tried it. i have heard everything from 1:1 to 1:2 to 4:6 to 3:1 and so on and so on. I would like to know if anyone has experimented with different ratios. Thanx in advance |

I believe (if memory serves) when My friend made one of these he used a 1:1 ratio and it worked EXTREMELY well. he filled a tuna can with it the stuff and the resulting smoke could have easily filled a large school gym with thick black smoke in no time at all. ------------------ http://members.xoom.com/Splynncryth |

Maybe even 2:3 Suger KNO3 but like i said it was years ago that he did it. I know it was not a great difference (great being like 4:1 or something like that) the diffrence (if any) was fairly close together. ------------------ http://members.xoom.com/Splynncryth |

I used to use a mix of sugar and nitrate. The smoke is white and not too irritating, but you'll be coughing for a long while after breathing it. Not healthy. It burns very hot and throws out red hot slag so don't use it anywhere that may catch on fire. Start with a 1:1 ratio (volume) and test it. If there's a white residue you have too much nitrate, add more sugar. With the proper ratio you'll have nothing but a light black residue after burning. ------------------ |

oh yeah that is one thing i did not mention. the tuna can, after the thing was done, was turned into a melted chunck of metal with the consitancy of oatmeal. (VERY HOT!) do not light on a pile of leaves or on anything you do not want to catch on fire. the grass we lit it on was scorched also. ------------------ |

Adding about 5% of motor oil would not harm the smoke production, but a look into that is warranted. |

What would adding motor oil do for the whole process? ------------------ |

Probably turn the smoke black. ------------------ |

The ratio I always use is 1:1 and you get the best kind of smoke bomb that way and the best packaging from experience is the tube from toilet paper. But it has to be the melted mix and you have to stick toilet paper in the bottom and then epoxy. Don't epoxy the top or it might explode from the pressure which might not be that bad, as long as your far away from it. It has never failed me yet, but I always wanted to try to add food coloring to get a colored smoke. Have any of you tried this or think it will work? ------------------ |

I doubt food coloring would work. try diffrent metals like Mg or Cu to get color. i am sure that would be the key to color. ------------------ |

The idea of adding oil is to use the heat and vaporize it into oil fumes. Food coloring might work, depend on how heat resistant the dye is, the reacting temprature Depend on color of which part you want to change, change smoke color, go with dyes, change the flame/flash, go with metal salts. Big problem is, food colors are sold in flasked solutions, yet the dye must be in solid form, and at least broken into bits to work. Pouring the food color liquid on sugar is going to be a mess, so the other way is probably to dye the KNO3 first, dry it, ground it, then really start using it. |
