Hers's an interesting patent I found for a sonic weapon that is basically a pipe with hand grips. It produces highly directional sound waves that can deafen a person and, if large enough, blow down doors and windows. If you get the "Alternitiff" plugin for your browser, you can see the actual patent drawings for the weapon. It uses fuel and oxygen to produce a small explosion in the pipe.

I got a book put out by that company, the sonic weapons are weak, but the lazer rifles do work quite well.
