NiteLife A New Voice	posted January 06, 2000 09:11 PM Hi guys. Since I work at a pharmacy, I am starting to collect those instant cold packs. Not for sprains, of course. Instead, I am slowly filling up a Rubbermaid container full of the prills, but I have a question or two. When I was reading through my trusty copy of TM31-210, it said I could use Ammonium Nitrate two ways. The first way was to add fuel oil (gas+motor oil) or Al powder. Which would have better explosive results? Also, in the archives, there was some debate as to wash the Ammonium Nitrate prills. Is this required? I plan on detonating the mixture with a Chapstick(tm) container full of AP. I am assuming this will work. I plan on documenting my results.
darcey Frequent Poster	posted January 06, 2000 10:59 PM From my experience the Al powder with Ammonium Nitrate is easer to detonate then the ANFO, as for explosive results i thought the ANFO had more power. But don't take my word because when i did the comparision these where too many variables to be really 100% sure which one was more powerful. How big are the charges going to be?? If you have a big charge of ANFO you will have shit all chance of detonating it with a chapstick full of AP. You need 50gm of high explosive for every 5 pounds of ANFO (correct me if im wrong). Do you have any access to Nitromethane?? This is a much better fuel to use then fuel oil. Easer to let off and more powerful too.

HMTD Factory Frequent Poster	posted January 07, 2000 12:27 AM Comparing these two, I say the Al stuff is better in sensitivity, in a confined pipe, Al mixture can be set off with burning fuse while ANFO needs a booster no matter how. The Unabomber once used an Al-AN bomb, he used electricity(tungsten bulb fuse?) to initiate it. He actually never used a detonator for any of his job.

MHR unregistered	posted January 07, 2000 02:51 PM I'm buy An-istant cold pack and now i want purify it with the method described by NBK2000, Now i' have two Questions, 1)what is the % of Nitromethane /An for make the explosive? 2)there is a least quantity of AMNM because does the detonation happen? Sorry for my English but i only speak italian. thanx

To make ANNM you should use a ratio of one part pure nitromethane (100%) to five parts powdered ammonium nitrate, let soak in a sealed contianer for one hour and use. Have a look at http://www.go.to/explosives This site has abit on it and also the plastic version of this explosive.

As far as ratios go: For the ANFO mix, it would be 1 Fuel Oil (1:1 gas/oil) to 16 parts AN. For the AN/Al mix, 4 parts of AN to 1 part Al. To be honest, I would love to try the ANFO mixture. I would want more power vs. ease of use. There is this old walking bridge nearby I would like to take out (it is quite an eyesore). I was fortunate enough to find Hexamine at the local scout shop, so my options include AP and HMTD for detonators. Nitromethane? Would you mind elaborating on that a little bit? I saw Tetranitromethane and Trinitromethane on mega's page, but I am not quite sure which one you are reffering to. What would be the ratios of this to the AN? Would this be significantly better than fuel oil? Thanx
HMTD Factory Frequent Poster	posted January 08, 2000 03:45 AM Trinitromethane is solid at room temp, won't melt until 150C. So they are referring to tetranitromethane since they "pour" it.
darcey Frequent Poster	posted January 08, 2000 06:40 AM nitromethane is a explosive fuel used mainly in drag car racing. It is also used in model airplane fuels. Im not really sure where you could find it but try some model shops and ask for pure nitro fuel.
