Don't use steel wool. It burns. Use copper screen or scrubbers instead. ------------------ |

copper screen? scrubbers? huh? I forgot to add a vital part to make this thing work. you have to tape the end with lots and lots of duct tape. poke a hole in the end in the middle. just incase you used too much tape the air will escape and it wont blow up. I have made one of these I used sponges. for info purposes only ------------------ |

yeah i was just thinking to use sponges and not the steal. And this silencer (assuming you do not use sonic .22's)is very effective. how well does it dull the sound? ------------------ |

a low thump and a crack. probably not too much to worry about unless you are a spy. if you have a big back yard and nosy neighbors. just build a barrier between so they cant see the gun. if they come over have some nails a board and a hammer, throw the gun in a drawer. and start hammering. they shouldnt know the difference. it sounds like this.

The reason for copper is that it is a very effective heat absorber that will rapidly cool the hot gases from the powder burning. Cooling gases causes them to lessen in volume and become more dense, thus move slower through the silencer. Steel wool will burn inside the silencer. I don't know about a sponge, but unless it's wet it will eventually burn or char since it's organic. ------------------ |

actuly sponge wraped around the copper would help silence it more, just use natural sponge not that cheap dish washing stuf. |

alright assuming you used sub-sonic .22 bullets what would the shot sound like you think? and does a .22 bullet produce enough hot gasses to wear out steel wool/a sponge very quickly? granted it would over time. but not that speed you are implying it to be. ------------------ |

it shouldnt wear out too fast. the only problem I had was the end kept blowing off. i use little pieces of construction paper(the cheap kind that teachers give you to build stuff)taped on. an even better alternative would be a soft thick piece if rubber with and "X" cut in the center. it would be good to hot glue this on. and with the subsonics I think they would be about like james bonds gun silenced. or about like you hitting your palm with your fist. ------------------ |

It should sound like a BB gun, it is heard to truley "silance" any gun, but it is posible ------------------ |

a bb gun! damn that it nice. i know it is nearly impossible to totaly silence a gun but a great reduction is good for snipers and thoughs who wish to remain hidden. thanks for the info. ------------------ |

no problem, just be carful forst of all if the silenger gets too hot it may explode, or at leest lower acuracy, and also it is a serious crime to be caugth with one in your possession, you can be concidered a thret by the way this sight has lots of good books check it out http://www.nic-inc.com/index.html ------------------ |

yes i know all about the hazards of silencers. but you keep saying "it will get to hot" and "it might explode" does a .22 bullet produce ENOUGH gas to do this in a short period of time (or before the heat is "sinked") ------------------ |

could you use (not should you) but could you use pvc piping to build this? ------------------ |
|

yes definetly. I just had a few pieces of black plastic pipe laying around. I dont know where it came from but I had it. and another thing, I will say this again DO NOT USE METAL. if the silencer tips alittle and the bullet hits the pipe it will probably destroy your gun ------------------ "... always look on the positive side of things, blow things up not down" -- Ragnar Benson |

cool cause i havea .22 rifle that i want to silence so i can hunt on my property. (i sit on 4 acres which is to small for a loud crack) i am going drill holes in a half inch pvc pipe cover the pipe with dish washing pads duct tape them on and then cover the pads with like 1 1/2 inch pipe. then i am going to use sub sonics to hunt small game in my back yard. thanks alot! ![]() ------------------ |

these little buggers work pretty good i just shot my .22 with one of these and it dulled the sound to about half of what it normally is (maybe a little more than half) i used a subsonic and it worked great. on mine i had an inner chamber with holes drilled in it, steel wool covered the holes and then i put a casing over it. i had one end cap (at the muzzle) and the other end was open. so i still have some work to do on it. but it worked great. no one called the cops. ------------------ -The eagle may soar but the weasle does not get sucked into jet engines. -The beatings will continue until morale improves. |

yeah, they work really good, I would have added an outer casing but I had the plastic pipe in right there(I have no idea where it came from) and I didnt have any endcaps or bigger pipe or anything, and mine worked great. ------------------ "... always look on the positive side of things, blow things up not down" -- Ragnar Benson |
