what types of chemicals are dogs trained to sniff out? only nitro based? AP is made from pretty common stuff, would they be able to sniff AP and know it was an explosive? how about salt peter? and also, bomb detectors(elec. type) what kind of chemicals do they search for? Would they reconigze AP has an explosive?.

i have no idea but on an interesting side note. a couple of days ago in my shcool the police brought in dogs to sniff lockers and some poeple got fucked for having pot in there. (the moral of the story...school is public and so is everything about it)

They train the dogs specifically for each different category of substances(possibly certain exceptions). So the customs ppl will have a dog that can smell fruits and vegetables. In a school they will bring in the drug sniffing doggies =]. Unless they have a reason they wont bring in the explosives sniffers. And I have no idea what explosives they train them for.

i'm not really sure what type of explosives they can sniff out but they can sniff out a heap. I went to a customs display at our local airport and they had some sniffer dogs there. There were varoius displays of the dogs at work sniffing out vegies, pot, narcotics and then they brought out the explosive sniffer dogs. These little fellas look kinda funny because they were wearing little blast proof vest with plydex hoods. They sniffed out a shotgun shell, a stick of gelinite, a blackpowder shell, fireworks and a assortment of military explosives. So if you want to put a bomb somwhere you better rap it in layers of plastic and put strong pepper (ground) all over the shop, it fucks up the dog's sence of smell, but hey thet are only doing their job so don't do anything bad to them. It also costs $20,000 to train each sniffer dog.

Dogs are trained to sniff out nitrogen compounds. Since practically all explosives contain nitrogen, this ensures the widest possible detection ability.

But, conveniently enough, AP doesn't contain nitrogen. So it's likely that the dog wouldn't be able to detect it. But the thought of having to carry around a pipe with several pounds of AP in it is a scary one indeed.

Don't make that much AP. Don't put AP in a pipe. Too dangerous. the latter could be accomplished safely if you put some thought in it..

You could use chlorates+vaseline with AP to set it off... No nitrates there. Would be hard to get it working well possibly.
