Instead of posting a new threed i thought i would just post it here. Mercaptan is added to natural gas so you can tell when you have a leaky stove or other wise. Agent blak had told me part of the procedure for it but has clamed to lost the artical. It says to bubble hydrogen sulfide bubbled thrue Ethyl Alcohol makes ethyl mercaptan. But he does not remember if you bubble it or reacte it. Also how would i go about making hydrogen sulfide? If i need to bubble it i would need to make it into a gas form. Can any one help me on reacting this or how to make the hydrogen sulfide. Thanks

Go to "The Hive" at http://lycaeum.org/~strike/cgi-bin/ubb_cgi/Ultimate.cgi?action=intro&BypassCookie=true . It's a drug forum but they have extensive chemistry resources. Use the search engine. I've made H2S by heating sulfur and parrafin wax in a sand bath. After the sulfur melts it begins generating H2S.

It would seem to me that making mercaptan would be similar to chloral. Bubble H2S through the alcohol at room temperature until it's saturated. Continue bubbling while slowly increasing the temperature of the alcohol until it's refluxing and no more H2S is being absorbed. Then fractionally distill to seperate.
