Soldier's Handbook (review)
Author: Lt.Col.Anthony Herbert
Published 1982 Price: $100.00

I bought this book the month it was published back in 1982. Fast forward 16 years to my official review.

This book is a combination of several military FM's, the Boy Scouts Handbook, and John Minnery's book, Kill Without Joy (a banned Paladin title). It is NOT worth the hefty price tag of $100 in my opinion. That is not to say that this book doesn't have any redeeming value. The information is very good and could easily save your ass in many circumstances. But for $100 I think it should have elite information not available from other sources.

Here are a few items from the book that stand out as valuable information in my opinion:

-How to make an expedient handgun or rifle from plumbing pipe and hardware.

-How to fight and kill with any knife without any practice--the first time you pick it up.

-How to open ANY door without keys. Also includes lockpicking skills, opening locked file cabinets and drawers.

-How to surreptitiously open and reseal mail.

-How to make a variety of bombs, fire bombs, mail bombs, homemade switches, exploding bullets.

-How to run someone off the road with your car with absolutely no damage to it.

-Demonstrates a variety of creative killing techniques (all from the book Kill Without Joy--formerly How To Kill, Volumes 1 thru 6, by the late John Minnery)

-How to clean and care for your rifle.

-How to beat the hell out of a prisoner with a rifle.

-Various prisoner handling methods--such as tying him up with a belt, hog tying, beating the hell ot of him, etc.

-Survival skills for every environment--desert, polar, land, ocean, etc. Includes such entertaining info such as surviving in a car when its. submerged in water

-Rope work and rope ties.

-First-Aid for everythig from poison ivy to getting limbs blown off.

-Basic hand-to-hand combat.

-Plus much more.

Col. Herbert claims to be America's most decorated soldier. In my opinion the best part of the book is the forward and the written text in the opening chapter. He dispenses some ver good advice on courage, leadership and decision making.

What the book really lacks is
editing--its full of typos. The book also claims to be printed on paper that that fades if it is photo copied. For $100 I never took the risk of seeing if this was true.

You can either buy a foot locker full of military and fringe books, or the Soldier's Handbook. Out of 5 stars I would give this one a 3.

Killer Elite-

That book sounds very interesting, can you post some of the text of that book? the part about creative killing methods, like the other post you have here, I am interested in that, please post more creative ideas. It would also be nice to know how to kill with a knife. And to see if the book fades when copied why don't you tear out the title page or some other worthless page, copy it, and see if it fades.
I do not think it would fade, if so, it would also fade when left in the sun.
